Proxy Access for Children and Young People

Proxy Access for Children and Young People
At our practice, we take your child’s confidentiality and rights very seriously. NHS guidance requires us to review parental proxy access at key ages.
What to Expect as Your Child Approaches Age 11
When your child turns 11 years old, parental proxy access to their online records will automatically stop.
This is part of the NHS commitment to protecting young people’s confidentiality and ensuring they are involved in decisions about their healthcare.
  • Parents/guardians and the child will receive a letter around their 11th birthday explaining this change.
  • If parents/guardians wish to continue proxy access, they may reapply by completing a form together with their child.
  • Once approved, proxy access will allow parents/guardians to:
    1. Book and manage appointments
    2. Order repeat medication
Proxy Access and Contact Details at Age 16
When a young person reaches 16 years old, we are legally required to:
  • Remove all parental/guardian proxy access from their medical records
  • Ensure that only the young person’s own telephone number and email address are listed as their contact details
At this point, the young person will be able to apply for access to their own records if they wish. Please note:
  • We cannot share information with, or liaise with, parents/guardians without the young person’s explicit consent.
